Avadain entered into a Letter of Intent with a first licensee to manufacture our graphene.

The US-based advanced materials company will also make a $200,000 investment in Avadain’s current crowdfunding round.

The LOI calls for the parties to negotiate and sign a definitive License Agreement in December. The parties’ intention is to begin manufacturing large amounts of samples next year, followed by industrial quantities of LTDF graphene flakes.

The terms of the LOI are confidential.

“We are delighted to have entered into this letter of intent with a manufacturer which shares our vision for the disruptive importance of large, thin and nearly defect free graphene flakes,” says Brad Larschan, Avadain’s CEO.

Perhaps my favorite science correspondent is Prof. Jim Al-Khalili, a theoretical physicist at the University of Surrey who is a regular broadcaster and presenter of science programs on BBC radio and television, and a frequent commentator about science in other British media. In this 2-minute clip, Prof. Al-Khalili compares the tensile strength of a stretchy polymer strip to one containing 3% graphene flakes. You’ve got to see this! This demonstration uses graphene sheets, which are a particularly poor material for this purpose. We believe that using just 0.01%-0.05% of Avadain’s large, thin and nearly defect free flakes would produce significantly superior results. This is a demonstration of our graphene’s performance in just one use case, but it illustrates the potential of Avadain’s graphene flakes for vast use in polymers and composites.

For those of you who missed it, here’s a link to Avadain’s April 27th special announcement on our technology breakthrough. In our first crowdfunding campaign, we noted that the largest risk factor was our ability to scale graphene flake manufacturing to mass production. This has been the focus of intense R&D efforts since the $3.77 million Department of Commerce/NIST award in April 2022.

The SwRI team found a novel, inexpensive material that could serve as a 3D cathode. They placed graphite along and within the porous surface of this material…and it worked! It created the same high-quality graphene flakes. And what’s really exciting is that the three-dimensional surface area was 10 times that of our original two-dimensional cathode…and the exfoliation occurred in about 25% of the time, resulting in a 40 times improvement in throughput.

We believe the last known technical obstacle to scaling to mass production has been overcome. We think this is a game changer.

Southwest Research Institute has made a technological breakthrough that dramatically increases the volume of graphene flakes while substantially reducing the processing time.

The good news was delivered on Valentine’s Day to representatives from Avadain, Panasonic, the RAPID Manufacturing Institute, TVA, Tech Farms Capital and one investor representative.

“I was really impressed with the progress SwRI has made,” said Yuichiro Takayanagi, Panasonic’s director on Avadain’s Board.

The delegation toured the laboratory facilities where the upscaling work is taking place and viewed the graphene flakes in person.

“It was a truly awesome meeting,” said Andrew Knott, a Harvard Business School Alumni angel investor in Avadain. “We got to meet the team doing the upscaling work and examine materials as they were transformed from graphite into high-quality graphene.”

Avadain Featured by The Graphene Council

Industry trade group The Graphene Council featured Avadain in an August 26, 2022 article titled “Unleashing the Graphene Revolution with Avadain’s Breakthrough Technology”.

“The commercialization of graphene has been in the limelight in the nanotechnology community ever since it was isolated in 2004. With multiple commercially viable products already introduced, it is clear the global graphene market reached its inflection point in 2021. With demand for high-quality graphene rising extremely quickly, this megatrend is on the verge of burgeoning,” The Graphene Council reported.

The Graphene Council estimates that industry needs 300k-600k MT of graphene annually. “Of this, an estimate 10%-15% of demand will be for high quality graphene [like Avadain’s] for high value uses,” it said.

Demonstrating our flakes in a biosensor that can detect live coronavirus particles in real time.

Creating an N97+ face mask using our graphene flakes as the filter media.

Why we’re creating solutions:

The biosensor was developed by the University of Arkansas. However, it was not sufficiently accurate due to researchers using graphene oxide - high quality graphene was unavailable.

Similarly, Flextrapower created an N95 face mask using graphene oxide. They needed high quality graphene to achieve N98 or even N99 filtration.

We are delighted to announce that Dr. Sarah Roscher has joined the Avadain team as a consulting graphene scientist. Sarah was the lead researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute of Applied Solid State Physics, which developed Avadain’s technology (2016-2020).
