In the recent group ride with 10 other non-Lightning electric motorcycles in the SF Bay area, Lightning was the ONLY electric motorcycle that did NOT charge after 113 miles when stopping for lunch. “Lightning’s solutions use DC-DC converters that have high power density, high efficiency, and a small footprint”, said Hatfield. Lightning designed their drive system to reduce weight while not compromising strength, reliability, or thermal management. Additionally Lightning conducted extensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to optimize range and efficiency. “….[Above] is one of the reasons why we are achieving high-speed records. Everything we learn about making a motorcycle more efficient means we can use a smaller battery pack and a more affordable drive system providing the same performance and longer range”, said Hatfield.

Hatfield then concluded this interview: “I see a time in the future where petrol motorcycles will be collected as great historical pieces, whereas the typical motorcycles will be electric. I don’t think that the future is that far away”.

As part of Lightning’s Ultra Fast Charge System development, Lightning completed one in a series of long-range test rides, this one a round trip from Hollister to Irvine in California, over 700 miles on November 10, 2023. The Lightning Ultra Fast Charge System allows for our 24kWh battery to charge from 20 to 80% in only 10 minutes.
